Description:
Canada is undergoing an unprecedented expansion of commuter rail and light rail systems due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and the need for sustainable transportation solutions. Transit Asset Management (TAM) is essential for maintaining the efficiency, safety, and reliability of these growing public transportation systems. However, Canadian transit agencies sometimes encounter significant challenges in implementing robust TAM practices, impacting the overall quality and sustainability of transit services, and there are varying levels of maturity in the asset management practices employed across the country. Key challenges range widely between funding constraints, data management, a shortage of expertise and dedicated resources, and aging infrastructure, but addressing these gaps is crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability and reliability of Canadian public transit systems.
In this session we will explore the Transit Asset Management landscape across Canada, with the intent of understanding the current best practices and limitations, identifying key issues, and discussing potential solutions that could be developed for the benefit of Canada's transit industry. The session will be composed of two parts:
Part 1: Invited Speaker Presentations and a Moderated Panel Discussion (1h)
Transit asset management (TAM) is only becoming more important as systems grow, become more complex, and integrate newer technologies alongside existing ones. Featuring representation from transit agencies, consultancies, and service providers, this panel will be an open discussion highlighting best practices, ongoing challenges, and opportunities to support efficiencies and improved outcomes in this space, with insights and lived experiences from those working in implementing and improving TAM in cities across Canada.
Speakers:
-Catherine Tays, Strategic Initiatives Manager, CSA Group
-Anaïssia Franca, Director and Associate Partner of Strategic Consulting and Advisory Services, CIMA+
-Ryan Versteeg-Biln, Director, Asset Management, AtkinsRéalis
-Llewellyn Fonseca, Principal, Capital Investment Planning & Corporate Asset Management, TransLink
Part 2: Interactive Workshop (2.5 h)
Following the panel discussion, a workshop will engage transit professionals, industry leaders, and interested parties in the audience in a focused dialogue on the current challenges and opportunities in Transit Asset Management (TAM) across Canada. As part of CSA Group’s ongoing research initiative, this session aims to gather practical insights and expert feedback that will directly inform the development of national standards and evidence-based recommendations. By leveraging the collective experience of workshop participants, we will explore innovative approaches to improving asset management practices in the public transit sector.
